Unholy Matrimony: Croire, décroître

14/12/09  ||  Kampfar

I’ve never been to Switzerland, or Confoederatio Helvetica if you like, and I’m not exactly eager to visit them parts of the Alps either. Why? Well, I hate people, suck at skiing, dislike chocolate, don’t care about clocks, and a gazillion dollars in need of a secret home I have not. But even though I have zero interest in traveling to the heart of Europe, or whatever, I think they have a great metal-scene down there. Nah, not really.

Unholy Matrimony is not a band, a lone soul named Vladimir being its sole member, and learning this came as a medium surprise. Put simple, this Swiss with a name made in Russia is close to entirely made of talent. And here is how I reached such a conclusion: in addition to handling every instruments, artificial drums included, the bastard also did the production bit. I don’t know if he did a fine job on the preceding UM albums, of which there are two, but I very well know that the time and effort spent mixing “Croire, décroitre” wasn’t a waste on par with humanitarian aid.

“Croire, décroitre” is, roughly put, raw, yet atmospheric black with lots of blasting going on. Not raw as in necro-grim, thank fuck and all that, but compared to most efforts claiming to be metal-noir anno now, what UM has on the menu is definitively of a rather harsh nature. And here is some more reviewing. This album is varied but seldom pretentious, if at all, and here is also quite a lot of fine details for your ears to discover. I’m not amazed by the sheer brilliance of it all, I’m too old for that kind of shit, but by Odin am I almost mighty impressed.

Oh, senile me almost forgot, here is also a tiny bit of death present. There should’ve been (a bit) more and some of the songs would’ve done better with a couple of minutes taken away from them. No doubt about it. But, if you are looking for seldom boring black with fine vocals on top, or wherever, do lend your ears to this one. Better even, take a pair of screwdrivers, not the drink, and ram them into both hearing channels with full force and then some.

Fuck you.
